I struggle daily with prioritizing and decision-making for family, business, and personal activities. Even for ME, exercise is often the item that gets put on the back burner! It’s so hard to dedicate a daily hour for fitness goals!
The good news?…. All it takes is ten minutes! Your workout doesn’t have to be long, nor traditional! Lengthy cardio sessions and hour long strength-training is not necessary. Instead, research shows benefit from short, intervals with bursts of maximum energy. This is coincidentally also an efficient way to exercise. My own children often laugh at my commitment to drop and do 1o pushups between stirs of veggies!
Ironically referred to as SIT training, Speed Interval Training requires you alternate periods of high-intensity exercise with a quick, low-intensity recovery period. In a ten year study, researchers at McMaster University studied three control groups in which they found that those using SIT principles for their fitness regime noticed increased fitness levels and more calories burned over a short period of time than their counterparts who used steady exercise routines or no exercise at all.
[ ] [ ] [ ] I can vouch for this. I routinely hear the comment, “you run marathons, you can eat anything!!” This is unilaterally not true! Yes, marathon training burns a lot of calories, but a runner’s body becomes highly efficient at using the calories to run long miles. Loosely interpreted, this equates to a hearty appetite coupled with fewer calories used. This is when it pays to mix in some SIT training, intervals of high intensity, to burn more calories, gain lean muscle mass, increase your metabolism and to continue reaping the benefits, long after the workout.
There are many ten minute workout resources on the internet, on machines (with their interval training), and even through just mixing in some speed within your daily walk or jog.
